The story takes place in Finland in 1939. Ann (played by Per Christensen) is a Norwegian nurse serving in the Winter War. During her work, Ann meets a patient named Markus (played by Thomas Kretschmann), and as they spend time together, Ann and Markus gradually fall in love. In order to be together, they leave the army and move to northern Norway to build their little family. In the summer of 1940, war breaks out again, and Markus is drafted, while Ann is forced to stay in her hometown to continue caring for the wounded. The morale of the troops fighting against the Soviet Union declines, and they ultimately suffer a great defeat. Markus secretly escapes back to his hometown in Norway, only to find his wife living with German officer Ruth (played by Bjørn Sundquist).
