Cran (Michael J. Fox), a popular Hollywood actor, decides to change his on-screen image by taking on the role of a detective. This is his attempt to break free from his previous typecast. To better prepare for the role, he travels to New York to work with real homicide detective John Moss (James Woods), choosing to experience the real life of a detective firsthand. Although Moss may not welcome the arrival of this Hollywood star, he must follow his superior's orders and team up with Nick to hunt down a serial killer. However, Nick proves to be quite clumsy in his detective work, sabotaging Moss's carefully designed plans and resulting in every mission ending in failure.
