Sophie (played by Sandrine Bonnaire) works as a maid in the middle-class Le Rive household, desperately hiding her secret of being illiterate. Introverted and sensitive, Sophie is cautious to avoid mistakes and gains the approval of her employers. The Le Rive family treats Sophie politely, yet it also highlights the different social standings between them. In the town post office, Sophie meets Jeanne (played by Isabelle Huppert), who belongs to the same lower-class. Jeanne harbors a twisted resentment towards the wealthy and, after becoming Sophie's friend, never stops inciting Sophie to sever ties with the upper class. The conflict escalates to an irreconcilable state, and Sophie's secret is exposed in the Le Rive household, causing the harmonious facade to collapse instantly, while Jeanne and Sophie's rebellion resembles a storm…
