The Legend of Wind and Clouds is set against the backdrop of Japan's attempt to invade China during a tumultuous period, telling the legendary story of two brothers who, living in tumultuous times, take it upon themselves to save their country and the people. Amidst a scene of devastation and flames, a pair of twin brothers, both common folk, find themselves lost in a chaotic world. Where should they go? One is a master magician, the other a master of cheating; in times of national crisis, how will they demonstrate their talents? With open guns and hidden arrows, blood rains down, and spies swirl; fate rises and falls with the tide, making it hard to distinguish friend from foe, and danger lurks everywhere! Yesterday, the person you shared life and death with was your brother; today, that same brother puts you in peril! Yesterday, her eyes sparkled with tenderness; today, she bears the weight of the world, and her mornings have turned to dusk, leaving only fleeting memories of love and hate. The Japanese invaders are rampant, and the Chinese people rise up; the winds and clouds converge, drums shake the earth, and the sounds of killing echo; they compose a tragic song that invigorates the nation and narrate a legend that endures through the ages! Just a hundred days old, the twin brothers Pu Feng and Pu Yun suffer a massacre at their family home. Fortunately, they are saved by the illusionist troupe leader Shun Tianxiao, who keeps them alive and adopts them to learn the art of magic. The elder brother, Pu Feng, possesses great talent but has no interest in it, while the younger brother, Pu Yun, though less gifted, is diligent and eventually achieves success. Pu Feng accidentally enters a casino while trying to raise money for his brother and establishes an indissoluble bond with it. Both brothers harbor feelings for their senior sister, Shun Shun, who, however, is particularly fond of Pu Yun. To raise money to save her mother, Shun Shun decides to marry into a family for good luck. On the eve of her wedding, she reveals her feelings for Pu Yun with sorrow. Pu Feng, wanting to support his sister and brother, decides to win some money at the casino for their mother’s treatment, but is caught cheating by the casino owner Jiang Dacheng and loses two fingers. At the wedding, Shun Shun is raped and abducted by Japanese officer Sato Takao, and Shun Tianxiao is killed. Pu Yun becomes the new troupe leader, leading the Shun family troupe through hardships, while Pu Feng leaves the troupe to wander. Jiang Dacheng, appreciating Pu Feng's boldness and character, treats him as a confidant and takes care of him, but Pu Feng refuses to owe anyone favors and declines Jiang's kindness. He survives by performing magic on the streets. By chance, Pu Feng encounters the cheat master Chen Er during one of his performances, and Chen Er, appreciating him, decides to mentor him, imparting all his knowledge of cheating. Both share similar personalities, with raucous heroism and a desire for revenge; though outcasts, they are furious over national humiliation and personal vendettas. Unable to fight on the battlefield, they decide to utilize their cheating skills, teaming up with younger brothers Shunzi and Zhuizi to sweep through various casinos, most of which were run by Japanese or their sympathizers, winning large sums of money which they donate to anti-Japanese fighters. Although they cannot fight on the front lines, they do what they can to assist the anti-Japanese efforts. Pu Yun leads the Shun family troupe to performances across the region, but the state of affairs makes it difficult to make a living. Intelligent and diligent, Pu Yun continually researches, improving and innovating many performance techniques. With hatred for the Japanese, he incorporates anti-Japanese content into his performances, receiving positive reviews from local Chinese audiences. Having lost his senior sister to Japanese humiliation and his master to Japanese murder, Pu Yun swore in front of his master’s spirit: he would never perform for the Japanese. During a performance in Yixian, a Japanese officer sends a collaborator to invite Pu Yun to perform, but Pu Yun rejects the request on the spot. The collaborator uses threats and temptations, but Pu Yun remains resolute. The collaborator forcibly takes all the Shun family troupe’s props, threatening that if they don’t perform the next day, they will die. Adhering to his oath and risking his life, Pu Yun abandons all the troupe’s props and leads them to flee Yixian at night. Pu Yun travels extensively, re-manufacturing props and continuing to perform. During a performance in Pinggu, he meets Zhao Zongnian, a mid-aged country gentry, who praises Pu Yun and the Shun family troupe, inviting them to perform. Pu Yun agrees happily. For more than a year afterward, with Zhao Zongnian’s assistance, Pu Yun and the troupe’s lives gradually improve. In the winter of 1939, noting the rampant activity of Japanese and puppet forces in the area, Zhao Zongnian suggests that Pu Yun leave Pinggu for other opportunities and earnestly requests Pu Yun to take his niece Liu Lin as a disciple, to which Pu Yun agrees. Leading the Shun family troupe once again on their journeys, although it is hard work, they gain fame and earn more money. Pu Yun donates a considerable sum to anti-Japanese forces to support the war effort. The true identity of the gentry Zhao Zongnian who helps Pu Yun is a Communist, and the so-called niece Liu Lin is also an intelligence worker for the Communist Party. After a period of observation, Liu Lin realizes that Pu Yun possesses excellent qualities, and Zhao Zongnian and Commissioner Han decide to recruit Pu Yun as a party member, engaging him in collecting and transmitting intelligence through his performances across regions, launching a spy war against the Japanese army. Upon discovering Zhao Zongnian’s true identity, Pu Yun is both surprised and delighted, promptly deciding to join the Communist Party and participate in the anti-Japanese frontline efforts, later being assigned to work in Shanghai. Pu Feng and Chen Er join forces to dominate the casinos. After winning big from a Japanese businessman, they are secretly plotted against, leading to Chen Er and Shunzi being harmed, while Pu Feng narrowly escapes and finds his way to Shanghai, where he continues to scheme against Japanese and collaborators in the casinos, eventually gaining the recognition of Chen Mo and Xu Shaolin, heads of the Kuomintang’s Shanghai military intelligence, and becoming an intelligence officer. One day, Pu Feng encounters his senior sister Shun Shun at a casino. After learning about her current situation, Pu Feng devises a plan to rescue her and returns her to the Shun family troupe. Liu Lin develops feelings for Pu Yun through their close interactions, while she feels jealousy toward Shun Shun, who has returned to the Shun family troupe, and suspects Shun Shun’s true identity. After several incidents, Pu Feng realizes the corruption and hypocrisy of the Kuomintang, feeling extremely disappointed and drifting away from them, eventually joining the Chinese Communist Party and teaming up with his brother Pu Yun to relay intelligence for the party; meanwhile, Liu Lin and Shun Shun finally reconcile. Through a series of brilliant magic performances, Pu Feng and Pu Yun successfully embark on their espionage work, becoming outstanding underground intelligence workers for the party and making a significant contribution to the anti-Japanese war.
