In 17th century Japan, during the prosperous era of the Tokugawa shogunate, the fourth shogun, Ietsuna (played by Shontaro Somiya), was in power. Coming from a go-playing family, Yasui Sanchō (played by Junichi Okada) not only possesses exceptional go skills but is also passionate about arithmetic and astronomy. Recommended by the lord of Aizu, Munesada Hōshina (played by Kōshirō Matsumoto), he embarks on a challenging and lengthy journey of astronomical observations with a group of professionals. The results prove that the Taika calendar, introduced from the Tang Dynasty and used for eight centuries, has significant inaccuracies. Influential samurai and aristocrats, represented by the powerful Mitsukuni Mito (played by Kiichi Nakai), hope to seize this opportunity to create an accurate and practical local calendar. However, this task is not only monumental but also faces pressure from the imperial family in Kyoto. Over more than a decade of negotiation, Sanchō experiences the most dramatic and glorious moments of his life... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Hironobu Chokufō.
