A family of four, headed by a Member of Parliament, lives in a luxury apartment on the Left Bank of Paris. The MP's young daughter, Paloma (played by Garance Le Guillermic), is quirky and loves to interpret the world through her camera; she is a genius little philosopher who is not yet twelve. Not wanting to be a goldfish with a predetermined fate in a fishbowl, Paloma plans to commit suicide on her birthday. The concierge, Helene (played by Josiane Balasko), is a plump and unattractive 54-year-old widow. She carefully maintains a vulgar image as the concierge while building a rich spiritual world for herself in her private room. However, Paloma vaguely discovers this secret, and the newly arrived Japanese gentleman, Monsieur Ozu (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki), also senses a side of Helene that is unknown to others. Under Monsieur Ozu's polite guidance, both Helene gradually sheds her humble facade, and Paloma begins to reevaluate life and death. This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by French author Muriel Barbery.
