Erin Talyor Brodsky's debut feature film "Hear and Now" explores how genetic deafness affects two generations in her family, winning the Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. This film continues from the autobiographical documentary, as Brodsky's son Jonas inherited the hereditary deafness gene, becoming nearly completely deaf by the age of four and receiving cochlear implant surgery in childhood. Now 11 years old, he has become familiar with the world of sound and is learning to play Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Brodsky's parents also received cochlear implants, but unlike Jonas, they have spent most of their lives in a silent world. As Jonas explores what silence means to him, his grandfather is navigating the changes that come with gaining hearing.
