The film tells the tragic outcome of the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I and focuses on two protagonists—idealistic Archie (played by Mel Gibson) and the wayward Frank (played by Mark Lee). They originally come from Australia, and their experiences in the war shape their characters and values. Archie is an idealist who was originally a runner on the sports field, but out of a desire for justice, he decides to join the war. He is full of sportsmanship and hopes to carry that spirit to the battlefield. He is unwilling to play a trivial role on the battlefield and wishes to fight the enemy personally, even knowing that the orders from his superiors are absurd; still, he remains loyal to executing them. This idealism and loyalty make him stand out on the battlefield. In contrast, his friend Frank is originally a wayward character who likes to cheat and flout the rules. However, as he finds himself in the war, he gradually sheds his frivolous attitude and begins to feel the brutality and reality of war. This experience changes his outlook, leading him to mature and accept social responsibility.
