Marcel (played by André Wilms) was once a somewhat famous writer, but the freedom-loving man grew tired of the high and mighty monotonous life of a writer. He moved to Le Havre and transformed into a happy shoeshiner. The lovely and warm-hearted residents of Le Havre helped Marcel find a spiritual home, where he lived a peaceful and stable life that he had longed for. A young African boy's unexpected arrival disrupted Marcel's orderly life. Out of sympathy and instinct, Marcel took in the poor boy who was being chased by the police. Just as things were getting tough, Marcel's wife Arletty (played by Kati Outinen) fell seriously ill and needed bed rest. With fierce police on one side and his ailing wife on the other, Marcel suddenly found himself at a crossroads of fate.
