During the Republic of China, to bring good fortune to the ailing matriarch Lady Zeng, the prominent Zeng family in the capital mobilized their entire clan to marry the great-granddaughter-in-law Ruizhen (played by Ha Hui) into the family. Unexpectedly, as soon as the new bride arrived, the matriarch passed away, turning a joyous event into a funeral. The Zeng family is no longer the glorious entity it once was, reduced to a hollow shell of its former self.
