The story takes place in the Jiangnan area during the 1930s. Old Bao (played by Guan Zongxiang), who lost his wife early on, has been working at the Qin residence for thirty years. His only wish is to raise his son, Bao Guowei (played by Liu Changwei), to become successful one day. Bao Guowei is a third-year student at a provincial high school, but he is unmotivated and spends all his time hanging out with wealthy classmates. As a result, he fails several subjects in the final exams and is held back a grade. When Old Bao hears the news, he is troubled and distressed. Bao Guowei does not appreciate his father's hard work; instead, he feels embarrassed by having such a poor father. Old Bao humbly borrows money for the next semester's tuition and uniform fees, but his son continues to pursue a life like the rich kids and compares himself to them. After the school starts, he is incited by his classmates to fight and injures someone. Coupled with his previous flirtation with a female classmate during the break, the school decides to expel him. When Old Bao learns of this, he knows it is beyond his power to rectify the situation...
