Director Christophe Barratier once again tells the story of a choir after his debut film "The Chorus," filled with nostalgia and vibrant characters, establishing a monument to French independent cinema that achieved great box office success upon release. The film is set against the backdrop of France from 1935 to 1937, during the peak of the "Popular Front" movement, where the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) led the working class to gain legitimate political power for the first time. Under the leadership of a group of socialist activists, a series of labor rights struggles began throughout French society. Labor relations became unprecedentedly tense. Amid widespread strikes and calls for reform, many workers did indeed see improvements in benefits and conditions. However, in many places, workers did not only see no improvement in conditions but instead faced harsher realities due to factory closures and the economic depression of the time. The protagonist of the film, the theater stage manager Pip (played by Gérard Jugnot), is one of those deeply affected. To make matters worse, his wife betrays him during this time and runs off with another man, leaving him and his son to rely on each other. Unexpectedly, his son is accused of being unable to provide for himself after performing on the street and is consequently taken away by administrative authorities. At the same time, the theater where Pip works is also shut down by local officials, leaving him in utter despair. If Pip had chosen to end his life at this point, the story would have little else to tell. Dramatically, he does not choose to sink into despair after his setbacks; instead, he regains his fighting spirit and decides to organize a theatrical performance to uplift his life. He gathers the quirky dancer Jack Jackter and the idealistic revolutionary youth Emil, who are also both unemployed. Together, they start repairing the rundown theater and organizing a group of unemployed youth to join them. They also unexpectedly find the talented actress Duss. None of the participants receive any payment for the performance, yet everyone’s enthusiasm remains high. This performance brings hope back into the lives of many.
