A rural boy named A Gui (Cui Lin), aged seventeen, finds a job delivering express packages in Beijing. He is promised that when he earns six hundred yuan, he can own a silver mountain bike temporarily lent to him by the company. He works diligently every day, but just when his dream is about to come true, the bicycle is stolen, and A Gui falls into despair. Xiaojian (Li Bin) is a Beijing boy of the same age as A Gui, but due to his family's poverty, he often feels inferior while trying to maintain his pride. After his father repeatedly breaks his promise of a bike, Xiaojian steals money from his home to buy a second-hand bicycle in order to impress his peers and attract girls (Gao Yuanyuan). Unbeknownst to him, this bike is actually the one that A Gui has lost. Upon discovering that his lifeline bicycle has been "stolen" by Xiaojian, A Gui desperately fights to reclaim it, and the two boys engage in a struggle to protect their simple dreams.
