In 1930s Shanghai, Shi Jun (Leon Lai) and Man Zhen (Wu Qianlian), who work at the same factory, become lovers. Man Zhen lost her father early on, and her sister Man Lu (Anita Mui) had to leave her lover to become a dancer to support the family, ultimately marrying the married Zhu Hongcai (Ge You). Shi Jun received an urgent letter and returned to Nanjing, only to find that his family summoned him back to arrange a marriage. Due to his weakness of character and waiting in vain for Man Zhen’s letters, Shi Jun ultimately married the socially compatible Cui Zhi (Wu Chunjun), whom he did not love. Meanwhile, in Shanghai, the infertile Man Lu, in order to secure her position, conspired to make Man Zhen pregnant with Zhu Hongcai’s child, ruining the love between Man Zhen and Shi Jun. After Man Lu's death, Man Zhen, for the sake of the child, became Zhu Hongcai's consort. Thus, these two destined but ill-fated individuals missed their chance at love.
