Carrie (Jennifer Jones) comes from a remote and impoverished mountain village. After growing up, she moves to the bustling city of Chicago, hoping to live her dream life here. However, reality is harsh, and her tight finances force her to live off others. By chance, Carrie meets a man named Drouet (Eddie Albert) on a train. Drouet is wealthy and generous, and Carrie quickly begins to live with him. Later, Carrie meets the hotel owner Hurstwood (Laurence Olivier), and by Hurstwood's side, she finally experiences the luxurious, extravagant life she has always dreamed of. But good times don’t last; an accident leaves Hurstwood destitute, and just as the two are struggling, Carrie gets a job at the opera house. With her beauty and singing talent, Carrie quickly rises to fame, and faced with newfound wealth and recognition, she decides to abandon Hurstwood.
