In his old age, Zhu Yuanzhang (played by Bao Guoan) sees that his son Crown Prince Zhu Biao is weak and ill. To bring good fortune, he arranges for Zhu Biao to marry Xu Miaoyun (played by Yu Feihong), the second daughter of founding general Xu Da. However, on their wedding night, the Crown Prince suddenly passes away, turning the new bride into a widow. Zhu Yuanzhang's fourth son, Prince Yan Zhu Di (played by Shen Junyi), is Xu Miaoyun's brother-in-law, possessing both literary and martial skills. Zhu Yuanzhang intends to establish Zhu Di as the Crown Prince, but faces opposition from the court officials and ultimately names his grandson Zhu Yunjun (played by Gao Hu) as the heir. Both Zhu Di and Zhu Yunjun secretly love Xu Miaoyun, but she is only devoted to Zhu Di. After Zhu Yuanzhang's death, Zhu Yunjun ascends to the throne and strictly reduces the powers of the twenty-five royal uncles holding fiefs throughout the nation. Prince Yan raises an army, and after more than three years of the "Jingnan Campaign," he storms from Beiping to Nanjing, besieging the capital. Emperor Jianwen, Zhu Yunjun, and Xu Miaoyun escape from the palace, while Zhu Di claims the throne and hunts down Emperor Jianwen for years. Xu Miaoyun finds herself in love with both Zhu Di and Zhu Yunjun. As the capital is besieged, Xu Miaoyun has two fleeting romances with the two men who are both emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Over half a month later, while fleeing with Emperor Jianwen, she discovers she is pregnant but struggles to determine which emperor is the father. Love and hatred, affection and enmity unfold in a life-and-death struggle among the two emperors and a peerless empress. Ultimately, pregnant Xu Miaoyun leaps into the Yangtze River, meeting her fate amidst the raging waves, unable to face the two beloved Ming emperors. Emperor Jianwen, in despair, shaves his head to become a monk and wanders around. Ming Chengzu Zhu Di then never establishes an empress in the palace, moves the capital from Nanjing to Beijing, and constructs the Forbidden City. He personally campaigns north six times, compiles the "Yongle Encyclopedia," and sends Zheng He on voyages to the West, achieving immortal accomplishments. During Zhu Di's last northern expedition, in the vast desert, he meets a wandering immortal monk, and they gaze at each other for a long time, shedding tears. Zhu Di passes away on his way back from this triumphant return. Later generations refer to Zhu Di as the Yongle Emperor.
