Sarah (Jodie Comer) grew up surrounded by denial but found her life's value and direction through her experience as a caregiver at the Sunshine Care Center. Empathetic and understanding, she excels in communicating with patients and easily earns their trust. Among the many patients, a middle-aged man named Tony (Stephen Graham) proves particularly challenging for Sarah. Tony suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease and exhibits violent behavior, making him a patient that only Sarah can manage. The outbreak of COVID-19 brings dramatic changes to the hospital's situation, with continuous outbreaks and unforeseen events causing Sarah to doubt her abilities and choices. The authorities' misjudgment of the pandemic prompts Sarah to reconsider the vulnerabilities and flaws in the healthcare system.
