Carl (played by Billy Bob Thornton), who is born with an intellectual disability, comes from an unfortunate family where his superstitious religious parents constantly view him as a punishment from God, leading them to despise and abuse him. Living in the shadows for most of his life, one day when Carl is 8 years old, he witnesses his mother having an affair with a pimp. The suppressed emotions within him explode, and he stabs both of them to death with a spring knife. For the next 25 years, Carl spends his life in a mental institution. On the day of his release, homeless Carl is taken in for one night by the administrator of the mental institution, marking the first time he feels the warmth of humanity. After being released, people avoid Carl like a plague until he meets his friend Frank (played by Lucas Black). Frank treats him like his best friend, and Carl sees the light of life. However, recently, Frank's family is troubled by his mother's alcoholic boyfriend. Unable to bear seeing his friend suffer, Carl decides to step in.
