The film was previously titled "Pad Man" and is based on the true story of Indian grassroots entrepreneur Muruganantham. Due to high tariffs on sanitary pads, over 80% of women in India were unable to use sanitary products during their periods in 2012. The protagonist, Lakshmi (played by Akshay Kumar), who has a middle school education, seeks to find a low-cost way to produce sanitary pads for the sake of his wife (played by Radhika Apte). However, he is perceived as a pervert and a madman by the entire village. Eventually, he travels to the big city of Delhi, where he meets his most important partner, the beautiful Pari (played by Sonam Kapoor). He ultimately invents a low-cost sanitary pad production machine and opens the patent, bringing a change to the perception of menstrual hygiene for women across India. In July 2018, India abolished the import tariff on sanitary pads.
