Based on historical events, "Chongqing Spy War" tells the story of the Kuomintang government inviting American cryptography expert Yardley to their side to decipher Japanese military codes during the Anti-Japanese War, leading to the establishment of the "Black Room" cryptography base. In 1937, with the full-scale outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War and the fall of Nanjing, the Kuomintang relocated to Chengdu in Chongqing. However, the Japanese air force repeatedly bombed Chongqing, causing countless casualties among the Chinese military and civilians. The Chongqing government decided to establish China's intelligence agency for cryptography and sent agent Qin Ao to Wuhan to seize the American expert known as the "father of cryptography," Yardley. In Wuhan, Qin Ao finally meets his long-lost fiancée, Hu Yuwen, who has now become the wife of the Communist underground party member Lu Ya. Qin Ao's arrival disrupts the peaceful life she has had for the past two years. Yardley refuses to go to Chongqing. Meanwhile, Japanese forces in Wuhan are continuously sending assassins to eliminate Yardley. At this moment, the underground party member Lu Ya receives a directive from his superiors to assist Qin Ao, who has come from Chongqing, in sending Yardley to Chongqing. During the mission, Lu Ya discovers that his wife, Yuwen, is actually a Kuomintang agent. Nonetheless, Lu Ya prioritizes the greater good, rescuing Qin Ao and Yuwen from danger and bringing Yardley to the Black Room in Chongqing. This technical institution was established against the backdrop of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists, with Lu Ya, Qin Ao, Yuwen, and Yardley all joining the Black Room. The members of the Black Room unite and achieve numerous successes in deciphering Japanese military intelligence. However, the peaceful days are short-lived; one day, the high-level AAA codebook used for a military conference is stolen by Yardley. Under the arrangement of the Black Room's boss, Tang Daming, Lu Ya is ordered to lead a team to capture the "traitor" Yardley. In reality, this is a "fishing operation" initiated by Tang Daming to uncover the long-hidden insider, the "One-Armed Bandit." Lu Ya's colleagues, including Li Kejiang, are all murdered by the Japanese, and Lu Ya narrowly escapes. As the sole survivor, Lu Ya is identified by the Black Room as the insider "One-Armed Bandit." Unable to prove his innocence, Lu Ya must go on the run. Qin Ao is tasked with closely pursuing Lu Ya. In a desperate situation, Yuwen suddenly appears, threatening Qin Ao's life to help Lu Ya escape. Qin Ao's hatred for Lu Ya grows, and he vows to capture Lu Ya personally. Facing adversity together, Lu Ya and Yuwen reconcile. Lu Ya and Yuwen join forces to identify the Japanese agent "Sister Four," who maintains contact with the "One-Armed Bandit." During their search for clues, Lu Ya unexpectedly finds out that Tang Daming has close ties with Sister Four. At this moment, the AAA codebook hidden in the Black Room goes missing again, throwing the Black Room into chaos. Qin Ao also discovers numerous suspicious points about Tang Daming's actions. Thus, Qin Ao takes the initiative to befriend Lu Ya, and they exchange information, finding that all clues point to Tang Daming. Just as they are about to join forces to trap Tang Daming, he is suddenly assassinated. At the same time, Lu Ya retrieves the real codebook from the Japanese. Upon hearing of Tang Daming's death, Lu Ya becomes suspicious of Qin Ao. At that moment, Li Kejiang, who had long been thought to be dead, suddenly appears. His mysterious movements further complicate the situation. In fact, the real "One-Armed Bandit" is Qin Ao. After Li Kejiang narrowly escapes death and suddenly reappears, Qin Ao confesses everything to him under immense psychological pressure, declaring his intention to turn over a new leaf. Li Kejiang believes Qin Ao and sacrifices himself, taking the blame for being an insider to allow Qin Ao to do more useful things for the country in the future. Although Li Kejiang dies as the "One-Armed Bandit," the observant Lu Ya still notices various suspicious signs about Qin Ao, continuing to suspect that Qin Ao is the true "One-Armed Bandit." However, Lu Ya struggles to find evidence. At this point, Yuwen suddenly gets into a car accident, suffers a serious head injury, and loses all memory of Lu Ya, only remembering that she was once Qin Ao's fiancée, and she returns to Qin Ao's arms. Lu Ya is plunged into anguish. However, this is actually a scheme by Yuwen, who uses herself as part of a "honey trap." She becomes Qin Ao’s wife and strives to find evidence amid their daily interactions. After enduring numerous hardships, Yuwen finally finds conclusive evidence. But then, she is almost killed by a Japanese spy planted beside Qin Ao. In a critical moment, Qin Ao appears, kills the Japanese spy, and rescues Yuwen. Yuwen returns to the Black Room with the evidence, uncovering intelligence from the Japanese regarding SQ4, a highly lethal bacteria that Japan plans to release in Chongqing as part of a biological warfare strategy. Lu Ya deduces that Qin Ao may have already turned to the right side. Indeed, Qin Ao has already become an informant lurking among the Japanese. To protect the security of the Chinese people, Qin Ao sacrifices his life to destroy all SQ4 samples. However, a Japanese spy known as "Thousand-Handed Guanyin" still hides among the superiors of the Black Room. To implement the military's insane biological warfare plan, "Thousand-Handed Guanyin" does not hesitate to infect herself with the virus, allowing it to continue spreading in Chongqing. Lu Ya steps forward and confronts "Thousand-Handed Guanyin," working to safeguard Chongqing’s safety amidst the flames. As the sun sets, a pregnant Yuwen watches tearfully as her lover goes down in flames with the enemy. In 1945, victory is achieved in the Anti-Japanese War. Across the land, there are traces of heroes’ blood and tears, and countless heroic souls.
