This film outlines the complex emotional entanglement between the male protagonist X (played by Giorgio Albertazzi) and the female protagonist A (played by Delphine Seyrig) through an interweaving of reality and memory. In X's memories, he has intimate knowledge of the pavilions and towers within the Baroque palace, and through his descriptive narration, audiences can feel the tremendous turmoil within him. On the theater stage, actors are performing scenes of longing and farewell. In the audience, X locks eyes with the noblewoman A for a long time. During a break, a dance tune plays in the theater, and X invites A to dance, where they express their feelings for each other in close proximity. A feels that this X is a stranger who is attentive to her, but X recounts a little-known story about an encounter with her from the previous year. Interspersed are scenes of a game confrontation between X and A's husband M (played by Sacha Pitoëff)...
