The artist known as the Face Changing King (played by Zhu Xu) lives a solitary life, using a boat as his home. Adhering strictly to the ancestral rule of passing on the art only to males and not to females, as well as keeping it within the family, he faces the risk of losing his unique skill. After being encouraged by the talented performer Liang Sulan (played by Zhao Zhigang), the Face Changing King wishes to pass on his craft for a lifetime. He buys a clever girl named Dog Wa (played by Zhou Renying) with five silver coins. Initially, the grandfather and granddaughter get along well, but an accident exposes Dog Wa's identity as a girl. The angry Face Changing King intends to dismiss Dog Wa, but after her desperate pleas, he reluctantly calls himself "the boss," and they continue to work together as performers. As they spend time together, the Face Changing King appreciates Dog Wa's filial piety and understanding, but he refrains from teaching her the art due to her identity as a girl. Unable to suppress her curiosity, Dog Wa secretly watches him practice at midnight, accidentally causing a fire that destroys their living quarters. Feeling ashamed, Dog Wa quietly leaves, but she always remembers the Face Changing King's kindness. Unbeknownst to her, this kindness will one day require her to repay with her life, and the art of face changing will ultimately be passed down because of this... This film won multiple domestic and international awards including Best Director at the 16th Golden Rooster Awards and Best Director and Best Actor at the 9th Tokyo International Film Festival.
