On September 9, 2000, Simsek's life suddenly changed dramatically: her father Enver was shot eight times in Nuremberg, suffering fatal injuries. The police suspected it was a gang-related crime, as Enver had a criminal background related to drug dealing. However, over the next six years, seven Turks and one Greek were murdered in other parts of Germany, making headlines as the "barbecue murder cases." Despite the lack of evidence, the police still believed there was a mafia connection. The phones of those considered suspects were tapped, their apartments were searched, and they underwent endless interrogations. One day, Hauptkommissar Bronner came to Simsek's home; he questioned the police's earlier assumptions, believing all signs pointed to radical right-wing extremists motivated by xenophobia. However, Bronner's request was denied, and his investigation team was disbanded on February 1, 2008. For many years, Simsek's family attempted to uncover the murderer but made no progress. On November 11, 2011, she discovered that the far-right terrorist organization NSU was implicated in the murders, leading to the prosecution of Beate Zschäpe and the deceased accomplices Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt.
