The film tells the story set in a small Kazakh town in the 1990s, focusing on the life trajectories of four adolescents. First, Zaharlas (played by Timur Aidarbekov) is dealing with the shadows of his father's past, as the latter was a con artist and struggles to find work. To support his family, Zaharlas can only work in a corn processing factory while facing the torment from his father. Another boy, Balapan, possesses an outstanding voice and can beautifully perform "Hail Mary," but during his school life, he gradually learns to face life's difficulties with his fists rather than his voice. Zahab is seen wandering through the town's trash heaps, searching for scrap metal to sell. He and three other boys of his age struggle through a life of homelessness in abandoned tunnels. Finally, Aslan is working hard to study medicine, but after he successfully persuades his girlfriend to have an abortion, his attitude towards life undergoes a fundamental change, leading to an inner transformation.
