Hengdao (Xu Jinjian), Mingjian (Lin Qingxia), and Xiao San Shao (Andy Lau) are three renowned martial arts masters in the Jianghu world, but due to differing aspirations, they take different paths. Hengdao joins the court, while Mingjian and Xiao San Shao agree to duel for the title of the world's number one. Xiao San Shao is falsely accused by a traitor in his gang of sneaking into the palace at midnight to murder the imperial concubine and steal a treasured sword. He is pursued by the oblivious Hengdao and four elite guards. To clear his name, Xiao San Shao begins a journey of evasion alongside his sympathizer, Die Wu, to uncover the truth. After numerous trials and tribulations, he finally discovers that Mingjian's sister-in-law, Caiyi, aiming to protect Mingjian's title, relies on her unique martial skills and the believed-to-be deceased "Mingliu Flower" leader Yan Dunhuang's hand to contend against the court, Hengdao, and him. After her plan fails, Caiyi, who has secretly loved Mingjian, takes her own life, but before dying, she still cares about the duel between Mingjian and Xiao San Shao.
