Mr. Alvin Strite (played by Richard Farnsworth) is over seventy years old. Not only is he eccentric and reclusive, but his eyesight is also deteriorating. Mr. Strite lives with his daughter Rose (played by Sissy Spacek), and although their life is modest, it is filled with tranquility and joy. The news of his brother Lyle (played by Harry Dean Stanton) being gravely ill disrupts the peaceful atmosphere in Mr. Strite's home. Despite having not seen each other for nearly ten years due to past conflicts, Mr. Strite, now in his old age and having experienced the fluctuations and uncertainties of life, decides it is time to mend the rift between the brothers. Thus, Mr. Strite sets off on his riding lawn mower, aiming for Wisconsin, 300 miles away.
