The film is adapted from several short stories by Maxim Gorky, mainly drawing its plot from "Makary Chudra" (Макар Чудра). "Makary Chudra" is a romantic saga of the Roma people, telling the tale of the horse thief Loiko and the proud beauty Rada, depicting their tumultuous love and hate across life and death. The story is set in the late 19th century in the borderlands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically the region of Bessarabia (Note: Bessarabia Бессарабия — the area between the Dniester and Prut rivers, part of Kievan Rus in the 10th-11th centuries, belonged to the Principality of Moldova in the 14th century, occupied by Turkey in the 16th century, became part of the Russian Empire in 1812, was occupied by Romania from 1918 to 1940, and after 1941, was mostly included in the Soviet Moldavian SSR and southern Odessa region, now the Republic of Moldova). The protagonists are wandering Roma, and their hard lives and unique customs give off a bitter yet passionate aura in Gorky's writing.
