Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a member of an Italian fascist organization, and his new mission is to eliminate his former university professor, Luca Quadri (Enzo Tarascio), a member of an anti-fascist group, in Paris. Marcello uses his honeymoon trip to Paris with his fiancée Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli) as an excuse to visit the professor's home. Accompanying Marcello on the mission is Manganiello (Gastone Moschin), who is disguised as his driver. At the professor's house, Marcello becomes deeply attracted to the professor's young wife, Anna (Dominique Sanda). Marcello's accomplice, Manganiello, continually urges him to eliminate the professor, but he is reluctant to act. When Manganiello learns that the professor and his wife are going to the countryside, he prepares to carry out the assassination alone... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Italian writer Alberto Moravia.
