The extreme left movement initiated by the Red Guards nationwide caused great concern for Zhou Enlai (portrayed by Wang Tiecheng), who was the Premier of the State Council at the time. Zhou Enlai stepped up during the national crisis to defend old comrades and veteran friends like He Long and Chen Yi. To ensure national construction, Zhou urged the revival of production at Anshan Iron and Steel Company. In 1966, after the Xingtai earthquake, he went to the frontlines to supervise reconstruction. In the 1970s, China and the U.S. began multi-level contacts; Zhou met with Kissinger and joked about hippies during the visit of the American table tennis team, promoting the normalization of relations between the two countries. In 1971, Zhou Enlai focused on smashing Lin Biao's conspiracy to overthrow the state. Long-term high-intensity work caused Zhou's health to deteriorate, and cancer cells were found in his body. Zhou returned to the old revolutionary base in Yan'an to visit; the impoverished lives of the local people troubled him, and he assigned experts from Beijing to help Yan'an alleviate poverty. The activities of the Gang of Four became increasingly rampant, and Zhou pushed for Deng Xiaoping and Ye Jianying to return to important positions to continue the struggle against the Gang of Four...
