Mr. Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) is a loyal servant who once served as the butler for a famous British lord. He is now devotedly managing the estate of his new master, Lord Darlington, becoming the head butler here. A new housekeeper, Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), arrives; she is capable and manages the household with more flexibility than Mr. Stevens, leading to some minor conflicts between them at first. However, as time passes, the kind-hearted Miss Kenton quietly touches Mr. Stevens's heart. Despite her repeated displays of genuine feelings and hints of love, Mr. Stevens suppresses his emotions at every pivotal moment, burying his love for her in a story that remains silent. Miss Kenton reluctantly bids farewell to this unreciprocated love and moves away to marry someone else. As time flies by, when they meet again, the love in their hearts remains unspoken, and the deep longing manifests as a parting blessing at the train station.
