In 1937, Tong Jiaru (played by Yang Zhigang), a man from Rehe, leaves his hometown and teaches Chinese literature at Nie Zhongcheng High School in Shanghai. His adopted daughter, Nanna, has become disabled, and he is forced to stay instead of fleeing south again. Witnessing the invaders harming his compatriots, he endures humiliation in order to survive. Student Ouyang (played by Zhang Jiayi) is serving the country and urgently needs an assistant, so Tong Jiaru reluctantly helps. Ouyang sacrifices himself, and Tong Jiaru is exposed and targeted by Japanese spy Dongcun, who he cleverly outmaneuvers while completing his mission and clearing his suspicions. Ouyang's superior, Yang Xiao, is captured, and Tong Jiaru rescues him. His wife, Zhizi, has just given birth to a son, but she is killed while trying to protect Yang Xiao. Within six months, all four of the murderers involved in Zhizi's death are killed by Tong Jiaru without leaving a trace. Dongcun, lacking evidence, tries to force Tong to confess using cruel torture devices. The Communist Party organizes teachers and students to march, rescuing Tong Jiaru. Three years later, Tong Jiaru uses himself as bait to help comrades from both the Kuomintang and the Communist Party eliminate the Japanese spy base. After the Japanese surrender, Dongcun, unwilling to accept defeat, kidnaps hope and forces Tong Jiaru to duel him. Comrades subdue Dongcun and rescue hope. Dongcun scolds Tong as a coward, to which Tong Jiaru replies: "When facing invaders, the Chinese all have a brave heart."
