Just released from prison, Tom Joad (played by Henry Fonda) returns home to Oklahoma only to find that his house is empty. After inquiring, he learns from farmer Jim Casy (played by John Carradine) that, with the development of industry, the local farmers have been forced to leave. Tom and Jim find Tom's family at his uncle's house, and the family decides to head to California in search of new work. They load all their belongings onto a truck and set off. On the way, Tom's grandmother passes away. They discover a place where people like them are gathered to work, and they settle there. However, Jim unexpectedly dies, and in his quest for revenge, Tom kills someone and has to flee. The family can only leave to seek their next refuge, leaving the question of where homeless farmers will go... This film is adapted from Steinbeck's novel of the same name and won the Oscar for Best Director in 1941.
