Yoko (played by Aoi Yu) appears to be a polite and traditional woman, but she holds avant-garde and unconventional ideas. Her teaching career in Taipei leads her to become pregnant, and she faces a dilemma with her parents about whether to give birth, as she doesn't believe a child necessarily needs a father. The small bookstore owner, Zhao (played by Tadanobu Asano), who is also Yoko's friend, likes her but, lacking the mental readiness to take on responsibility, does not extend a timely hand during Yoko's most difficult moments. As a film made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ozu's birth, it fails to replicate the Tokyo scenery captured by Ozu (which has since disappeared), yet it successfully evokes the quiet beauty and restrained emotions characteristic of Ozu's films. However, several decades have passed, and the perspective on restrained emotions has significantly changed.
