In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, a tragedy caused by family grudges and the devastation of warlords changed the fate of the servant Lian Cheng (played by Huang Jue) of the wealthy Lian family. After the massacre of his master’s family, Lian Cheng became a trustee and sought revenge for them. Afterward, he fled for his life and eventually joined the Kuomintang after many hardships, and joined his benefactor Su Zhidan (played by Sun Hongtao) in the revolution, where Su planted the seeds of communism in Lian Cheng's heart. During the tumultuous times, Lian Cheng persevered through numerous trials with his passion and resilience. He rose to prominence in the Nationalist government while secretly being an undercover agent arranged by the Communists near Chiang Kai-shek. In this process, he also reunites with Han Kui (played by Zu Feng), the son of the enemy responsible for his master's massacre, and the national and family vendettas converge into a massive whirlpool… This film is based on a true story, and the protagonist Han Liancheng (originally named Han Guizhang) is known to be the highest-ranked undercover agent within the Kuomintang in history.
