The story takes place in the 1960s, where Brian (played by John Cusack) is the leader of the band "The Beach Boys." Brian is incredibly charismatic and talented, excelling in both singing and songwriting. Under his leadership, the band quickly gained a strong reputation in the industry and topped the bestseller charts. However, the fame and success brought numerous troubles and overwhelming pressure, ultimately driving Brian to the brink of a mental breakdown. Just then, he meets a psychiatrist named Eugene (played by Paul Giamatti). Eugene has been controversial in the industry for his extreme treatment methods, yet under Eugene's care, Brian's condition begins to improve. However, as time goes on, Eugene becomes increasingly controlling, gradually taking over all aspects of Brian's life, leading to intense conflicts between him and his band members.
