In the late 1920s, Communist Party member Liu Peisheng was imprisoned in the Shanghai International Settlement prison—Tilanqiao Prison—and was to be extradited by the Kuomintang government within fifteen days. After various rescue plans failed, underground Party member Zhang Nan, disguised as a settlement patrol officer, boldly volunteered to become a prisoner of Tilanqiao Prison under the pretext of releasing inmates.
