The story takes place in Nice, France in 1976. Agnès (played by Adèle Haenel) is a wealthy young woman born with a silver spoon in her mouth; her family runs the most luxurious hotel in the area. Despite her affluent upbringing, she falls in love with a man ten years her senior, named Maurice (played by Guillaume Canet). There are many rumors surrounding this charming man, but none can shake Agnès's love for Maurice, as she firmly believes he is her destined one. Due to his gambling addiction, Maurice gets into big trouble and decides to use Agnès's identity to curry favor with Fratoni (played by Jean Corso). Agnès obediently follows Maurice’s wishes, even betraying her own mother (played by Catherine Deneuve) for him.
