The story takes place in Eastern Europe in 1835, where the gendarme Constantin (played by Teodor Corban) is pursuing the slave Kafe (played by Toma Cuzin) in the vast desert along with his son Ivanita (played by Mihai Comanoiu), due to the slave's impure relationship with his employer's wife. Although they are father and son, Constantin and Ivanita have completely different personalities; the former is passionate and optimistic, always full of energy, while the latter is silent and introverted, constantly pondering the meaning of life. Along the way, the father and son encounter a variety of people with different skin colors and beliefs. Even though they are all human, there are intense ideological clashes among them, which greatly shock Ivanita's worldview and contribute to his growth throughout the journey.
