Every twelve years, in the forests at the foot of the Himalayas, selected individuals wear masks to hide their gender, relinquish their worldly identities, and live a strange ascetic life, seemingly dead, for two weeks in isolation. During the waiting days, songs are endless, dances never cease, some quietly cultivate themselves, while others, unable to let go of the mundane, probe into each other's backgrounds, unable to resist primal desires. This is the boundary between truth and falsehood, the gap between life and death; lifting the mask is destruction. The Bhutanese director Pawo Choyning Dorji, who gained attention with "The Cup," transforms the quest for enlightenment into a modern rural tale, blending legends, Zen stories, stage performances, and chanting into another exploration of Siddhartha. Amid the tug-of-war between humanity and divinity, the eternal song of life is sung. Guest appearances by Zhou Xun and Tony Leung add to the allure. "Sometimes, we must create illusions to help the world see the truth." ─ Pawo Choyning Dorji
