In the third year of the Manchu Xuantong era, which corresponds to the year 1911, the Wuchang Uprising occurred, and responses came from all directions, with the Southern Guangdong and Northern Frontier uniting for a blood-soaked republic. The Xiguan City, a key stronghold in the northwest, occupied an important point on the Silk Road and has always been a place fought over by military powers. When news of the Wuchang Uprising reached Xiguan, the backbone of the Tongmenghui, Lu Jianli, was overjoyed. The Qing army garrison commander, Wu Tianze, sensed that the Qing dynasty's demise was near and wanted to collaborate with the Tongmenghui.
