Once a police officer, Hans (played by Hans Hirschmüller) lost his job due to a false accusation by a prostitute. To make ends meet, he, filled with ambition, had no choice but to become a fruit vendor. Unable to gain the trust and admiration of his beloved's parents, Hans, now of marrying age, eventually married a woman named Irmgaard (played by Irm Hermann). After getting married, Hans's life officially took a downward turn, as Irmgaard's brutality and rudeness only exacerbated his misfortunes. Hans developed heart disease, and during his hospitalization, Irmgaard, unable to endure the loneliness, engaged in an immoral relationship with their neighbor, Ansel (played by Karl Scheydt). After being discharged, Hans was no longer able to sell fruit on the street and switched to setting up a fruit stand. By chance, he reencountered his wartime comrade Harry (played by Klaus Löwitsch), who brought some joy to Hans's family, but he still couldn't prevent Hans from descending into despair.
