In 1931, the monarchy in Spain was replaced by a republic. Fernando (played by Jorge Sanz), a deserter from the Madrid army, is questioned by two guards during his escape. The veteran decides to let him go, but the young soldier thinks it goes against military orders. They begin to argue, and from this, Fernando learns that they are father-in-law and son-in-law. Later, the son-in-law accidentally kills his father-in-law and, filled with regret, commits suicide. Witnessing this scene, the frightened Fernando runs away in a panic. While seeking shelter, he meets the wandering artist Manolo (played by Fernando Fernán Gómez). Before he leaves, Manolo decides to accompany him and picks up his daughter at the station. When Fernando sees Manolo's four beautiful daughters, he makes an excuse to stay. He subsequently becomes romantically involved with the four women, leading to a comical farce... This film won the Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards, defeating the Chinese film "Farewell My Concubine."
