Shortly after the German-Soviet division of Poland in 1939, Polish youth Witold Pilecki (Jim Sturgess) was sent to a labor camp in Siberia for his so-called "anti-party, anti-Stalin" espionage activities. By 1940, in the harsh Siberian winter, Pilecki met fellow political prisoner, actor Andrei, who had been planning an escape for some time. Americans like Smith (Ed Harris) and the criminal Valka (Colin Farrell) gradually joined their small group. On a snowy night, Pilecki and six others successfully escaped from the labor camp. The only thing they knew was to head south towards Lake Baikal while avoiding the ever-present informers. Along the way, some could not withstand the harsh climate and perished. Just as they were about to reach Baikal, a mysterious girl named Ilana (Saoirse Ronan) joined them, adding more difficulties to their already treacherous journey through Mongolia, Tibet, and across the Himalayas to reach British-controlled India in search of freedom...
