The promising young congressman Steven Collins (played by Ben Affleck) finds his female research assistant suddenly murdered. During a congressional hearing against the arms dealer Pinnacle Corporation, Collins loses his composure, leading to an affair being exposed and becoming the target of public scrutiny. He has no choice but to seek refuge at the home of his college friend and former campaign advisor, senior reporter Karl McCaffrey (played by Russell Crowe) of the Washington Globe. While investigating a murder case, McCaffrey discovers a connection between the victim and Collins' deceased female research assistant. With the help of colleague Della (played by Rachel McAdams), as McCaffrey's investigation deepens, the insider information about Pinnacle Corporation and the scandal involving the congressman come to light. Faced with the competing forces of journalistic integrity, the truth of the events, past friendships, and social justice, where will McCaffrey's report ultimately lead?
