In the summer of the second year of the Genki era, Hayakawa's Yauchi (played by Fujiwara Kanefusa) and Taihei (played by Chiaki Minoru) are trapped in Akizuki and unable to return home, as Akizuki has been defeated by Yamana. Therefore, Yamana has heavily fortified the borders of Akizuki and Hayakawa to prevent Akizuki's Yukihime (played by Uehara Misa) from escaping. The two encounter Akizuki samurai Manabe Rokurota (played by Mifune Toshiro) and Yukihime in the mountains, and, unaware of each other's true identities, work together to transport firewood through Yamana towards Hayakawa, motivated by the gold bars hidden within the firewood. Manabe's strategy helps the four successfully pass through the border between Akizuki and Yamana. Yukihime, unable to bear seeing Akizuki women (played by Higuchi Toshiko) humiliated by Yamana, orders Manabe to rescue them. As the five transport the firewood, they are suddenly stopped for inspection by four Yamana soldiers. Manabe promptly kills two of them and rides off to chase down the two who escaped. The pursuit leads them to the enemy camp, where they encounter Yamana samurai Tadasu Hyoue (played by Fujita Susumu).
