In the challenging year of 1942 during the War of Resistance Against Japan, the village of Zhaojiabao, located on the edge of the anti-Japanese base in Jiaodong, frequently suffered attacks from Japanese troops. To minimize losses, the district's military committee director Lei (Zhang Changrui) and Zhaojiabao militia captain Zhao Hu (Bai Dajun) gathered the wisdom of the community to devise strategies against the Japanese army: they united several nearby villages to form a militia alliance to expand their armed forces while using homemade landmines to create various minefields to deliver heavy blows to the Japanese troops. When the Japanese army sought to deal with the minefields, they sent in engineers to invade Zhaojiabao, committing widespread arson and looting. The militia members promptly summarized their experiences and learned lessons, continuously improving their mine-making technology and deployment methods, making it difficult for the Japanese to defend themselves. When the wheat harvesting season arrived, the Japanese had intended to take hold of Zhaojiabao while the militia hurried to harvest the wheat, but the militia had already set up a more intricate minefield.
