Yuusaku (played by Hiroshi Abe) is an ordinary worker whose family's changes lead him to lose his sanity and injure a coworker, resulting in a long six-year prison sentence. In prison, Yuusaku doesn't want to implicate his wife, so he voluntarily proposes to divorce her, giving her the freedom to seek her own life. Six years pass in the blink of an eye, and as Yuusaku prepares to be released, he finds that he still longs for his wife's smile and presence. He writes a letter to her saying that if she still loves him and wants to live with him, she should hang a yellow handkerchief on the flagpole at their home. If he returns and doesn’t see the handkerchief, he will leave on his own. Thus, Yuusaku embarks on his journey home, yet even he doesn’t know what kind of ending awaits him at the end of this tumultuous road.
