The film is adapted from the memoir written by Mariane Pearl, the wife of Wall Street Journal war correspondent Daniel Pearl. Daniel (played by Dan Futterman) goes to Pakistan to investigate a story about terrorists but unfortunately gets kidnapped and is soon killed. His wife Mariane (played by Angelina Jolie) prays for her husband's safe return, and her belief in finding him supports her as a pregnant mother. She resolutely writes her memoir, filled with memories of her time with Daniel, highlighting his journalistic ideals and courage in pursuing the truth. She wants her child to know that their father was once a dedicated journalist. Mariane ultimately learns to accept her husband's death with strength and calmness; she strives to keep her child away from racial hatred and the smoke of war while returning to France to continue her career and raise her child to adulthood.
