This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Lin Haiyin. A little girl named Lin Yingzi (played by Shen Jie) lives in the southern part of Beijing fifty years ago. Nearby their home lives a madwoman named Xiuzhen (played by Zhang Min), whose husband was killed for participating in the student movement, and her child is also missing, which drove her to madness. She often regards Yingzi as her own child, "Little Guizi," and Yingzi likes Xiuzhen and promises to help her find Little Guizi. Yingzi has a poor friend named Niuer, who often suffers mistreatment from her godfather while learning acting. Yingzi accidentally discovers that Niuer has the same birthmark as Little Guizi and helps them recognize each other as mother and daughter. After Yingzi starts elementary school, her family moves to Changdian. In the abandoned courtyard at the entrance of her home, Yingzi discovers a pile of grass where a thief (played by Zhang Fengyi) has hidden stolen goods. The thief, in order to support his younger brother's education, resorts to dishonorable activities, but Yingzi does not see him as a bad person. Soon, the maid Su Ma returns to her hometown, and Yingzi's father passes away, signaling an abrupt end to her childhood...
