In the early 19th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was invaded by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, leaving the empire on the brink of collapse. In this critical moment, some Poles placed their hopes on Napoleon. They reached an agreement with him, whereby the French army would help the Poles save their homeland, and in return, the Poles would assist the French in attacking Russia. In the Polish countryside, there were two opposing noble families, whose hatred had persisted since the late 18th century. The Horiszki family supported independence and was friendly towards France, while the Suppliński family had a favorable stance towards Russia. The conflict between the two families intensified as their homeland crumbled, and at this moment, Tadeusz (played by Michal Zebrowski) from the Suppliński family fell in love with a woman from the opposing family... This film is adapted from the epic narrative poem "Pan Tadeusz" by Lithuanian (Polish) poet Adam Mickiewicz and won six awards at the 2000 Polish Film Awards, including Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.
